Center for Visual Introspection Founders Discuss Romanian Art Scene Challenges and Independent Cultural Platform

Alina Serban, Anca Benera, Arnold Estefan, and Catalin Rulea co-founded The Center for Visual Introspection (CIV) in Bucharest as an independent research and production platform. Operating since at least 2012, CIV functions as a curatorial collective called p+4, aiming to critically examine relationships between art, public spheres, and power structures. The organization defines independence as self-funding, apolitical positioning, and noncommercial status, allowing free expression and public agency. Founders identify Romania's cultural stagnation stemming from isolated initiatives, lack of dialogue among actors, and minimal impact on policy makers. They note contemporary art exists at society's margins, with orthodox religion gaining prominence over innovative cultural processes. While avoiding imported models, CIV emphasizes local adaptation, transparency, and civic dialogue as pathways toward systemic change. The platform operates without sustainable models, focusing instead on context-specific approaches and continuous self-questioning.
