Centenary celebrations for Antoni Tàpies with exhibitions in Barcelona and Madrid

The centenary of Antoni Tàpies (Barcelona 1923–2023) is being marked with exhibitions, concerts, and performances across the Fundació Antoni Tàpies in Barcelona and the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid. The Fundació presents two shows: 'A=A, B=B' (until March 3, 2024) exploring Tàpies' relationship with science, and 'Tàpies. L’impronta dello zen' (until June 23, 2024) curated by Nuria Homs, featuring about 50 works including 13 previously unseen paintings and rare Zen Buddhist books on loan from the Tàpies family and collectors. Installations by Chiharu Shiota ('Fili della memoria', March 21–June 23, 2024) and Serge Attukwei Clottey (on the building's exterior) complement the shows. At the Reina Sofía, a major retrospective curated by Manuel Borja-Villel opens February 20, 2024, coinciding with ARCOmadrid (March 6–10, 2024), assembling works from 1943 to 2011 from dispersed collections. Borja-Villel, former director of the Fundació, recently received the Audrey Irmas Award for Curatorial Excellence.
