Censored chapter from Daniel Bougnoux's book on Aragon published by art press

publication · 2026-04-23

The journal art press has published the full text of a censored chapter from Daniel Bougnoux's book 'Aragon, la confusion des genres' (Gallimard). During a Louis Aragon evening organized by the Centre national du livre on October 22, 2012, Bougnoux revealed that Jean Ristat, Aragon's literary executor, demanded and obtained the removal of a chapter from the essay. While Ristat has the right to intervene in the publication of Aragon's own texts, Bougnoux argues he overstepped his authority by suppressing a chapter of a book about Aragon. The chapter, titled 'Pour ne pas oublier Castille,' is a literary portrait of Aragon under the pseudonym Castille, recounting Bougnoux's personal encounters with the poet in Toulon in July 1973. It describes Aragon's theatrical behavior, his cross-dressing, his use of makeup and perfume, and his relationship with his secretary Raoul. The text also reflects on Aragon's political stances, his dependence on love, and his final years. The publication precedes an article by Jacques Henric on Louis Aragon in art press n°395 (December 2012).
