Céleste Boursier-Mougenot's sound swings activate Frac Normandie cloister

exhibition · 2026-06-02

Céleste Boursier-Mougenot has opened a solo exhibition titled 'points de suspension' at Frac Normandie, organized in partnership with the Normandie Impressionniste Festival. The exhibition responds to the architecture of the 17th-century convent housing the Frac, focusing on garden space and landscape perception. In the cloister courtyard, the sound sculpture 'envolée' features eight swings arranged in a circle, each topped with an antique church bell; visitors' movements set the swings in motion, producing sound. The work references historical bandstands and the swing's cultural symbolism across centuries, from ancient Egypt to 17th-century French gardens, representing spring renewal and the transition from childhood to adulthood. 'Envolée' connects to another work, 'plage,' spanning 900 square meters.
