Céleste Boursier-Mougenot's Sonic Installations at Frac Champagne-Ardenne

exhibition · 2026-04-23

From June 1 to October 15, 2006, the Frac Champagne-Ardenne in Reims presented an exhibition of works by Céleste Boursier-Mougenot, held within his so-called "mobile" studio. The artist, originally a musician, has spent the last decade creating installations that give autonomous form to sound. His practice draws on everyday objects—such as aquarium air pumps, helium balloons, and repurposed items—to generate evolving sonic environments. Notable past works include musical swimming pools and a monumental aviary made of metal hangers where birds moved, producing aleatory compositions. At the Frac, pieces like "Schizoframes" invite viewers to lie on a sofa-like structure, aligning infrasound with a dephased monitor screensaver projection. Another recent work, "Prototype pour un index," networks a computer keyboard with a piano, allowing office work to simultaneously generate music. Boursier-Mougenot's approach bridges art and science, transforming artificial systems into reactive organisms. The exhibition showcased his inventive capacity to manipulate technology and create living, evolving sound forms.
