Ceiling collapse at Centro Pecci in Prato injures two workers

A 60-square-meter section of the suspended ceiling collapsed at the Centro per l'Arte Contemporanea Luigi Pecci in Prato, Italy, on October 2016. The accident occurred at 12:14 PM, involving a 56-year-old electrician and a worker. The electrician was on a ladder passing cables through the cavity when the ceiling gave way; he managed to grab a beam and avoid a serious fall. Both sustained minor injuries—one was treated on site, the other hospitalized for observation. The collapse happened on the first floor of the original building designed by Italo Gamberini, at the junction with the extension by Maurice Nio. The fallen portion was part of an installation by Julian Charrière, consisting of fifteen concrete mixers in operation, which was not accessible to the public and was intended to be viewed from behind a double-glazed window. Thus, even if the museum had been open, visitors would not have been at risk. Despite the incident, the museum's scheduled opening on October 16 is not in jeopardy, according to Prato's culture councilor Simone Mangani. The cause of the collapse and the extent of the damage are under investigation.
