Cecilia Vicuña to unveil Hyundai Commission at Tate Modern's Turbine Hall in October 2022

exhibition · 2026-04-20

Cecilia Vicuña, the 74-year-old Chilean artist and poet, will present a site-specific installation for the annual Hyundai Commission at Tate Modern's Turbine Hall. The work opens on 13 October 2022 and remains on view until 16 April 2023. Vicuña's practice, which she terms Arte Precario, addresses climate change, feminism, and social justice through textile sculptures that blend weaving, assemblage, poetry, performance, and painting. Her career began in Santiago before she entered exile following the CIA-backed coup against Salvador Allende in the early 1970s. Tate Modern director Frances Morris praised Vicuña as an inspirational figure for decades, highlighting the relevance of her work, which will be further recognized with a forthcoming Golden Lion Lifetime Achievement award. Morris expressed delight at collaborating with Vicuña, a tireless champion of ecological awareness and social justice, and anticipation for the October unveiling. This commission follows Anicka Yi's 'aerobes' installation, which occupied the Turbine Hall from October 2021 to February 2022.
