festival-fair · 2026-05-05

Cecilia Bartoli, director of the Salzburg Whitsun Festival since 2012 (extended to 2021), will perform her first male role in Handel's Ariodante at the festival from June 2-5, 2017. The production, directed by Christoph Loy, features Bartoli in a kilt and armor. Ariodante will also be staged during the Salzburg Summer Festival from July 21 to August 30. The opera premiered in 1734 at London's Covent Garden. Bartoli describes the work as a romantic journey through a prism of poets. The festival also includes Rossini's La Donna del Lago and a concert on Handel's Heroines. Bartoli has founded the ensemble Les Musiciens du Prince, supported by Prince Albert II of Monaco, and was recently named 'Court Musician.'
