Cecilia Alemani Reveals 'Il Mondo Magico' for Italy Pavilion at 2017 Venice Biennale

exhibition · 2026-05-05

Cecilia Alemani, the curator, announced the Italy Pavilion's title at the Venice Biennale (May 13–November 26, 2017) as 'Il mondo magico', paying tribute to anthropologist Ernesto de Martino's 1948 essay that explores the overlooked traditions of southern Italy. The exhibition showcases Franco Pinna's photographs capturing tarantellas and ancient rituals. Alemani highlighted the enchanting aspects of Italian art, drawing connections to Renaissance alchemy and 20th-century figures such as de Chirico and Savinio. This initiative echoes the 2013 Biennale curated by Massimiliano Gioni. In other news, the Turin Book Fair (May 18–22) is set to host a record 350 exhibitors, surpassing last year's count by 20. Additionally, Italia Oggi reports that the Italian government intends to sell the Italian Cultural Institute in Brussels after 85 years.
