Cecilia Alemani Announces 213 Artists for 59th Venice Biennale The Milk of Dreams

exhibition · 2026-04-20

Cecilia Alemani has unveiled the list of artists for the 59th Venice Biennale, titled The Milk of Dreams. This event will feature 213 artists from 58 countries, including 180 newcomers to the main exhibition. Originally set for 2021, it has been pushed to run from April 23 to November 27, 2022, due to COVID-19 delays. Alemani described the selection as 'transhistorical,' aiming to capture the current anxieties without being too literal. The title is inspired by surrealist Leonora Carrington’s drawings. She highlighted the strong representation of women and gender non-conforming artists, which challenges traditional male narratives. Participants include Nan Goldin, Simone Leigh, and historical figures like Sonia Delaunay and Claude Cahun, showcasing a diverse global talent pool.
