Cattelan's Lullaby Installed Opposite Pellizza's Quarto Stato at Milan's GAM

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Maurizio Cattelan's 1994 work Lullaby, which incorporates rubble from the 1993 mafia bombing of Milan's PAC (Padiglione d'Arte Contemporanea) in via Palestro, has been installed at the Galleria d'Arte Moderna (GAM) in Milan. The installation places the work directly opposite Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo's iconic painting Quarto Stato. Lullaby consists of large white bags containing debris recovered by Cattelan from the destroyed PAC exterior wall. The work is being donated to the Museo del Novecento and will officially enter the city's civic collections. The juxtaposition of the two works is intended to evoke emotional engagement and reflection on memory, conflict, and terrorism. The bombing in 1993 was a mafia attack that deeply wounded the city and its cultural community. Cattelan's gesture of donation is framed as a restitution of a piece of Milan's past, enriching the contemporary civic collections.
