Catherine Millet's Art Press History and New Book

publication · 2026-04-23

Catherine Millet and Richard Leydier have collaborated on "D'artpress à Catherine M.", released by Gallimard as part of the Témoins de l'art series, which details four decades of art press magazine's journey. At the same time, Millet is unveiling "Le Corps exposé" (Nouvelles Cécile Defaut), a compilation centered on artists who explore the body. The inaugural issue of art press, published in December 1972, included works by Barnett Newman and interviews with Marcelin Pleynet. Millet characterizes the magazine's editorial approach as a fusion of American abstract painting with conceptual and minimalist art. By around 1988, the publication began emphasizing art trends and cultural policies, critiquing the increasing bureaucratization of the art scene. Millet’s writing reflects her aesthetic influences from Donald Judd and Sade.
