Catherine Lorent's Sound Installation 'Relegation' for Luxembourg at Venice Biennale

exhibition · 2026-04-20

Catherine Lorent is putting Luxembourg on the map at the Venice Biennale with her sound installation called 'Relegation.' It features 13 electric guitars and three grand pianos, creating a rich blend of visual art, sound, and performance. Much of the setup hangs from the ceiling, echoing a baroque baldachin. In each of the five rooms, significant drawings are framed by either guitars or pianos. The installation uses Gibson Explorer guitars and grand pianos that work with E-bow electromagnetic fields, thanks to an interface developed with Berlin sound engineer Christian Neyens. The opening will also feature performances by accordionist Natasa Gehl and artist Martin Eder. Lorent recalls her first Venice experience in autumn 2001, inspired by Harald Szeemann's Biennale. The Luxembourg pavilion is located at Ca’ del Duca, Corte del Duca Sforza, San Marco 3052, and Lorent enjoys connecting with every visitor.
