Catawiki's 2024 Art and Design Buying Guide
Online auction house Catawiki has released its 2024 buying guide, compiled by New York Times journalist Nina Siegal and 300 in-house experts. The guide predicts strong interest in 20th-century art prints by Sonia Delaunay, who in 1964 became the first living female artist to have a retrospective at the Louvre. Other highlighted artists include Sandra Keja Planken for tapestries, and contemporary painters Vladinsky, Telari, Menna, Pili, Camporota, Marzulli, and Palmisciano for large-scale works. In design, Eileen Gray's armchairs are tipped for a resurgence, alongside Gaetano Pesce's La Michetta sofa and Jonathan Bocca's playful lamps. Pop culture collectibles such as early 1990s vinyl records (Smashing Pumpkins, Prince, Jeff Buckley, Snoop Dogg), limited-edition Bearbrick figurines, Mr. Brainwash silkscreens, and Shepard Fairey's Obey posters are also expected to attract bids. Catawiki was founded in 2008 in Assen, Netherlands, by collector René Schoenmakers and programmer Marco Jansen. The platform now handles over 15 million objects and half a billion euros in annual transactions, with notable past sales including Sylvester Stallone's Ford Mustang, a copy of Amazing Fantasy #15, the world's oldest postage stamp, a handwritten David Bowie disc, Napoleon's favorite wine, a mammoth skeleton, and a moon fragment. Stefania Filizola, Catawiki's director, credits the company's success to its expert curation.
