Catálogo de fotógrafas cubanas rewrites photography canon
Launched in 2013 by Cuban curator and researcher Aldeide Delgado, the Catálogo de fotógrafas cubanas is an interactive platform that for the first time compiles the work of Cuban women photographers from the 19th century to the present with a historiographic and critical approach. The project recovers the legacy of the first known Cuban female photographer, Encarnación Iróstegui, dating to 1853, and includes voices of women, trans, queer, and non-binary creators to challenge the established canon. The catalog functions as a dynamic database for artists, curators, critics, and cultural agents, featuring information on creators, publications, exhibitions, and open calls. It also promotes the contribution of women artists to contemporary art through talks, exhibitions, editorial projects, and partnerships with universities, museums, and other organizations.
