Castromediano Museum in Lecce Launches Design Call for New Merchandising Space

architecture-design · 2026-05-04

The Sigismondo Castromediano Museum, the oldest public museum in Puglia, reopens on June 22 after a major renovation that expanded its exhibition spaces to 5,000 square meters. The museum, established over 150 years ago, will feature an innovative concept store as part of the "Merchandising museale" project by Teatro Pubblico Pugliese and the Polo biblio-museale di Lecce. A call for designers has been issued to select original design works for the store. The project aims to integrate contemporary design with the museum's archaeological and artistic heritage, supported by the Regional Culture Department. Ettore Bambi, project manager at T.P.P., stated that the initiative is a first step toward systematizing Puglian creativity. The call is open to senior designers working with materials like metal, papier-mâché, fabric, glass, stone, and resin, as well as lighting, video games, and installations. Up to 20 works will be chosen by a national-level jury for a temporary exhibition, with potential rotation. A subsequent call will target emerging talents. The deadline for the first call is May 10, 2019.
