Castello di Sammezzano: Tuscany's Orientalist Gem at Risk of Decay

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

The 19th-century Castello di Sammezzano, located in Valdarno, is facing dire circumstances due to inadequate sustainable public access. Created by Marquis Ferdinando Panciatichi Ximenes d'Aragona (1813–1897), the castle showcases a unique dual facade and interiors influenced by diverse architectural styles. Having been closed for almost three decades, it suffers from significant conservation challenges, such as collapsed ceilings and shattered windows. On May 15–16, 2021, the FAI hosted sold-out tours. The "Movimento Save Sammezzano" is pushing for its restoration and improved public access. In 2016, it topped FAI's "I Luoghi del Cuore," and in 2020, Europa Nostra recognized it as one of Europe's most endangered cultural heritage sites. Ongoing petitions are calling on the Ministry of Cultural Heritage for its preservation.
