Castello di Miramare unveils restored 19th-century kitchens

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

After undergoing restoration that was completed in June 2023, the historic kitchens of Castello di Miramare in Trieste have reopened to visitors. This newly established route reveals the area where meals were crafted for Archduke Maximilian of Habsburg and his spouse Charlotte of Belgium during the 19th century. Situated in the semi-basement, these kitchens were designed for supply deliveries via the sea. Although original furnishings are absent, the museum's team, under the leadership of director Andreina Contessa, utilized 1861 architectural plans by Carl Junker for guidance. The exhibition includes ceramics, silverware, and original menus that showcase Maximilian's French haute cuisine. The restoration also improved both the interiors and exteriors, enhancing the overall experience at Castello and Parco di Miramare, which has reopened the Castelletto and Bagno del Duca d'Aosta.
