Castello di Miramare Reopens Duca d'Aosta Apartments with New Installation

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The Castello di Miramare in Trieste has reopened the Appartamenti del duca d'Aosta after over a year of planning and work, presenting a new installation that showcases early 20th-century furnishings, artworks, and objects. The castle, built between 1856 and 1860 for Archduke Maximilian of Habsburg and his wife Charlotte of Belgium, later housed Amedeo of Savoy-Aosta, his wife Anna d'Orléans, and their daughter Margherita from 1931 to 1937. The new installation, designed by architect Giovanni Tortelli, focuses on the rationalist and art deco styles favored by the Dukes of Aosta, contrasting with the eclectic 19th-century decor of Maximilian. Modern technologies include video columns showing period photographs and QR codes for detailed information. Director Andreina Contessa noted that the reopening inaugurates the 20th-century section of the museum, highlighting the castle's evolution as a noble residence. The park remains a key attraction.
