Castello di Gabiano opens to public for first time in 400 years
The Castello di Gabiano, a medieval castle in Monferrato, Piedmont, opens its doors to the public for the first time in its 400-year history under the Durazzo family. Guided tours, curated by art historian Luca Mana, began in late July and continue every Saturday in September and October 2024. The tours include the castle's historic apartments, gardens, and a labyrinth designed by architect Lamberto Cusani (1930–1931). The castle's art collection features works by Tunga, Lara Favaretto, Tatiana Trouvé, and Alexandre Maxwell, alongside historic pieces from the Durazzo collection. A conference, "1624 – 2024 Monferrato & Genova, dagli Alerami ai Durazzo," will be held on October 5, 2024, at the castle. The Durazzo family, originally from Albania, settled in Genoa in the 14th century and acquired the castle in 1624 when Agostino Durazzo was granted the fief. Current owners are marchesi Giacomo and Emanuela Cattaneo Adorno.
