Castello di Carini becomes contemporary art hub with Moon project

The medieval Castello di Carini near Palermo, Sicily, will reopen on July 15, 2017, as a contemporary art center called Moon. The project is conceived and directed by artist Giuseppe Buzzotta (Palermo, 1983) in collaboration with Daniela Bigi and Gabriella Ciancimino. Moon will host exhibitions, artist residencies, workshops, and meetings, transforming the fortress into a creative platform. The initiative responds to the municipality's need for a contemporary research program with political impact on community life through art. The inaugural exhibition features site-specific works by Gianni Politi (Rome, 1986), Campostabile and Stefania Zocco (Ragusa, 1980), and Mary Zygouri (Athens, 1973). Politi's Vussurìa reinterprets the artist as a court artisan with four decorative objects depicting the seasons. Campostabile and Zocco's Varie dal kilometro classico explores space through deconstruction and drawing. Zocco investigates the castle's history via its walls and restoration practices. Zygouri presents Allegorical Humanities, a video installation analyzing power and human relationships. The castle is historically known for the 1563 honor killing of the Baroness of Carini. Mayor Giovì Monteleone stated, "This is the new course of Carini, which is seeking its revival through culture." Moon runs from July 15 to September 15, 2017.
