Castelfalfi: A Tuscan Borgo Diffuso as a Model of Sustainable Tourism
Castelfalfi, a medieval borgo between Florence and Pisa, has been transformed into a sustainable tourism destination by Indonesian businessman Sri Prakash Lohia, who invested over €650 million after acquiring it from TUI. The restoration involved architect Raёd Abillama (known for expanding the National Museum in Beirut) for Casa Medici, Stefano Ricci for Suite La Rocca, and Affine Design for other suites. The property features bronze sculptures by Andrea Roggi and Paolo Staccioli, and oil from the 2024 harvest in bottles by artist Gianni Lucchesi. Lohia, a major rare book collector, displays part of his collection in a library-vitrine. The 1,100-hectare estate is open to all, with restaurants (La Rocca by chef Davide De Simone, Olivina by designer Henry Chebaane, Bar Ecrù & Lounge), a RAKxa Wellness spa, and eco-experiences like vineyard tours, olive picking, and beekeeping. The borgo has no gates or restricted areas, fostering inclusivity. The project emphasizes humanistic circular investment, with staff housing and amenities.
