Cassina Projects' X_minimal Rethinks Minimalism Beyond Aesthetics

Curated by Friederike Nymphius, the group exhibition X_minimal at Cassina Projects in Milan challenges reductive readings of Minimalism, presenting works that engage philosophical, political, and social dimensions. Drawing on James Meyer's concept of Minimal Art as a 'practical field' and 'critical debate,' the show juxtaposes diverse pieces that provoke dialogue. Highlights include Valentin Carron's decontextualized cross sculpture Mechanics and Animality (2021), Philippe Decrauzat's spatial wall intervention PAUSE ||| 2 0 2 0 – 2 0 2 1 (2021), Olivier Mosset's ironically titled monochrome Yellow (2017), and vibrant works by Blair Thurman and Liam Gillick. Upstairs, Gerwald Rockenschaub's reflective Ohne Titel (2021) dominates, alongside Martin Boyce's empty lanterns Dead Star Constellation (2014) and John M Armleder's LED composition Untitled (FS) (1998).
