Cassata Drone Project Launches in Palermo Ahead of Manifesta 12
In 2018, Palermo serves as both Italian Capital of Culture and host of the 12th edition of Manifesta, the itinerant contemporary art biennial opening June 16. Among the first events is Cassata Drone, a project by artist g. olmo stuppia curated by Giovanni Rendina. The project explores contrasts and oxymorons in Sicilian culture through the juxtaposition of cassata (a traditional dessert symbolizing layers of colonization) and drone (representing NATO's military presence). It includes residencies, meetings, exhibitions, and debates. The venue is a sixth-floor apartment in a rationalist building in the Kalsa district, open from June 20 to September 20. Activities begin in April with school and neighborhood collaborations. The culminating exhibition features RAQS Media Collective (founded in New Delhi in 1991, curators of Manifesta 7 in 2008), Maria Domenica Rapicavoli, and Stefano Cagol.
