Casilino Sky Park: Europe's largest rooftop sports and art hub opens in Rome

architecture-design · 2026-04-27

The Casilino Sky Park, Europe's largest rooftop sports and cultural center, has opened in Rome's Alessandrino district. Spanning 4,000 square meters atop a former Ipercoop supermarket parking lot, the facility features padel, pickleball, five-a-side football, street basketball, skating, skateboarding, parkour courts, a gym, an outdoor gymnastics area, a bar with at least 200 affordable seats, and changing rooms. Three urban artists contributed eco-friendly artworks: Giulio Vesprini painted the sports courts using water-based rubber resins; Alice Pasquini created non-stereotypical female imagery on the external surfaces of changing rooms and elevators; and UNO designed the perimeter track with alternating color bands and cardinal points, plus a balustrade painted with black Airlite paint dotted with stars and constellations. The project was realized by Fusolab, a social promotion and amateur sports association led by Dario Minghetti, and a.DNA, a street art organization with 12 years of experience that handled artistic direction. Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri praised the initiative as a virtuous example of repurposing abandoned spaces for community use, emphasizing the need for widespread sports facilities across the city. The park also hosts Italy's first pickleball court. Vesprini stated the project aims to demonstrate that urban art can generate coherent identity and dialogue with the city, not just aesthetics.
