CasermArcheologica in Sansepolcro Celebrates 10 Years of Art and Urban Regeneration

CasermArcheologica, a contemporary art center in Sansepolcro, Italy, marks its tenth anniversary in 2023. Housed in a former Carabinieri barracks, the project transformed the historic Palazzo Buglioni, once a cultural salon run by Minerva Muglioni of the Buitoni family. Abandoned in the 1990s, the building was revived in 2013 by art students led by Ilaria Margutti, now director of the association alongside Laura Caruso. After a 2015 fire safety closure, the space reopened in 2017 following a Culturability grant, recovering 1,000 square meters. CasermArcheologica has hosted 120 residencies and exhibitions, with 5,000 visitors in 2022 and over 6,000 in 2023. It was featured in Mario Cucinella's Italy Pavilion at the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale. Artists involved include Olivier Grossetête, Tina Helen, Alessandra Baldoni, Virgilio Sieni, and Silvia Camporesi. The anniversary program includes 'CASERMALAB' (until Dec 9), showcasing collaborations with local artisans in weaving, bobbin lace, woodworking, and mirrored glass; 'MESSO AL MURO' by Max Fish (until Nov 26), a typographic poster series; and 'SCONFINAMENTI' by Elio Mariucci and Fabio Mariacci (Dec 16), crossing arts with musicians, poets, anthropologists, and philosophers.
