Casa TN: A 71 m² House in a Rural Japanese Settlement

architecture-design · 2026-04-28

Casa TN, designed by 1-1 Architects, is a 71 m² house completed in 2024 in a rural settlement under urban control. The project, curated by Miwa Negoro, responds to rapid land subdivision and speculative housing developments that have increased density and worsened lighting and ventilation conditions. The design team includes Yuki Kamiya (lead), Yui Goto, and Kazuya Shibata, with structural design by Workshop and construction by Hirata Construction Co., Ltd. Photographs are by Takashi Uemura. The house aims to counter the trend of maximizing floor area ratios and subdividing interiors into many units, which has led to cramped and inflexible living spaces. Instead, Casa TN offers a more open and adaptable layout.
