Casa Roberto Marinho presents Maria Martins retrospective and Fluxos do Moderno exhibition
Casa Roberto Marinho, in partnership with MASP, presents the retrospective 'Maria Martins: desejo imaginante,' curated by Isabella Rjeille with Fernanda Lopes as assistant curator. The exhibition features around 40 works from the 1940s and 1950s, including sculptures, prints, drawings, and paintings, alongside documents and photographs. Fernanda Lopes notes this is the largest exhibition of Maria's work in Rio de Janeiro since her 1956 retrospective at the Museu de Arte Moderna. The show is organized into six thematic sections exploring how the artist articulated imaginaries of Brazil and the tropics. Concurrently, 'Fluxos do Moderno,' curated by Lauro Cavalcanti, marks the centenary of the 1922 Modern Art Week with 43 works from the collection by 12 artists, including Anita Malfatti, Tarsila do Amaral, Candido Portinari, Di Cavalcanti, and Lasar Segall. Works by Malfatti, Milton Dacosta, and Di Cavalcanti are shown for the first time at Casa Roberto Marinho since its 2018 inauguration. The exhibition opens with early modernist expressions like caricatures and illustrations.
