Casa para Mariposas: Children's Architectural Memorials for Colombian Conflict

exhibition · 2026-05-13

The project 'Casa para Mariposas' (House for Butterflies), led by Colombian architect Fabiola Uribe and her collective LunÁrquicos, engaged children and adolescents affected by Colombia's armed conflict to create architectural memorials. The initiative began in 2019 with a workshop at the Museo de Arquitectura Leopoldo Rother in Bogotá, inspired by John Quentin Hejduk's 'Victims' exhibition. In 2024, Uribe partnered with Carlos Barberá of the University of Alicante to secure cooperation funding. Two groups participated: 16 children aged 9–16 from San Jacinto (Bolívar), selected by the Asociación Red Antorchas, and eight demobilized youths aged 13–17 from Bogotá, supported by the Instituto Colombiano de Bienestar Familiar and the Fundación CRAN. Over a year, they produced 24 memorial models. The results were exhibited at the Centro de Memoria, Paz y Reconciliación in Bogotá from April 29 to June 29, 2026. The project also involved architecture students from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia in a parallel design lab. Uribe aims to establish Memorial Parks for children across Colombia, emphasizing that children's voices are often absent from official narratives.
