Casa Museo Covili Opens in Pavullo nel Frignano Dedicated to 'Italian van Gogh'

exhibition · 2026-05-04

The Casa Museo Covili has opened in Pavullo nel Frignano, in the Modena region, dedicated to Gino Covili, a painter described by critics as the 'Italian van Gogh.' The inauguration featured singer-songwriter and poet Francesco Guccini, who expressed his admiration for Covili's art and his connection to the Appennine landscape and rural civilization. The museum is housed in Covili's former home, a three-story building set in nature, offering a multisensory experience with light, music, and sounds that enhance the viewing of his works. Covili, who died in 2005, created paintings and sculptures depicting bucolic, rural, and dreamlike scenes. The house includes his studio, a multi-level room designed to explore different perspectives, with the Cimone mountain serving as a guiding motif. The museum displays his most beautiful works in the spaces where they were conceived. Matteo Covili, the artist's grandson, explained that the family foundation CoviliArte has preserved and expanded the collection over the years, organizing exhibitions and activities for younger generations. The red armchair featured in Covili's painting 'Discussione per la formazione della cooperativa' remains a focal point. The museum aims to make Covili's art permanently accessible to the public.
