Casa Eco: A Mexican Home Where Rock Formations Replace Walls
Sensacional Dinámica Mexicana (SDM), led by founder Sergio Padilla, designed Casa Eco, a private residence in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, on the edge of the Altiplano desert. The architects removed an existing wall that separated the city from the plateau, allowing large rock formations to serve as natural boundaries. The design features exposed concrete volumes that echo the site's geology, with one rock supporting a concrete wall that frames the landscape. The house includes a garage, cellar, study, living space, kitchen with a rock-integrated counter, and an outdoor kitchen worktop on a boulder. Upstairs are three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a TV lounge, and dressing room. The interior uses solid oak and handmade furniture, with strategic openings for light. Concrete textures mimic local órganos cactus. A row of cacti, mesquite trees, and desert palms form natural boundaries, while a seasonal stream provides an eastern border. The architects aimed to celebrate the terrain rather than colonize it, challenging local construction regulations. The project emphasizes coexistence with the landscape, where the site becomes an inhabitant of the house.
