Casa dei Grifi reopens on Palatine Hill with real-time guided tours

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-26

On March 3, 2026, the Casa dei Grifi, a domus from the Republican era located beneath Domitian's palace on Palatine Hill, will reopen following restoration supported by the Caput Mundi PNRR project. Giacomo Boni uncovered this site in 1912, which consists of eight rooms adorned with well-preserved wall paintings dating from the late 2nd to early 1st century BCE. The restoration, overseen by Aura Picchione and finalized in December 2024, incorporated 3D surveys and enhanced lighting, inspired by the griffin-decorated lunette that gives the site its name. Due to challenging stairs, a guided tour will be streamed in real-time by Federica Rinaldi, under the supervision of Stefano Borghini, with tickets requiring a Forum Pass SUPER plus €8. Alfonsina Russo envisions this approach as a model for future digital initiatives.
