Casa Chelina: Pablo Oñate's Self-Sufficient Retreat in Tepoztlán

architecture-design · 2026-04-20

Pablo Oñate Taller has completed Casa Chelina, a 150-square-meter residential project in Tepoztlán, Morelos, Mexico, set at the base of the Tepozteco hill. Designed by architect Pablo Oñate, the contemporary refuge integrates with the dense vegetation and rocky formations of the landscape, aiming for self-sufficiency and a reinterpretation of village life. The house turns inward while incorporating the surrounding natural scenery, with photography by Margarita Gorbea and Andres Diaz Sagare documenting the structure. Suppliers for the project include Comex and Whirlpool, contributing to its sustainable features. Scheduled for completion in 2025, the project was curated by Valentina Díaz, emphasizing a dialogue between architecture and the environment in this Mexican setting.
