cultural-heritage · 2026-04-24

A new educational collaboration has been unveiled by Cartier and The King's Foundation, titled 'The King's Foundation and Cartier: Decorative Métiers d'Art in Watchmaking.' This initiative aims to safeguard traditional watchmaking techniques. The program, funded through bursaries, will consist of five months of structured training followed by two months dedicated to project work, emphasizing skills like champlevé, grisaille, and marquetry. Targeting graduates and emerging designers in watchmaking and jewellery from the UK, the fellowship will take place at Dumfries House in Scotland, with sessions at Cartier's Maison des Métiers d'Art in Switzerland. Applications will be accepted starting in spring 2026, with the inaugural group showcasing their projects in a final exhibition in spring 2027. Both Jacqueline Farrell, executive director of education at The King's Foundation, and Louis Ferla, president and CEO of Cartier, highlighted the significance of passing down traditional skills to future generations. This initiative builds on Cartier's nearly 30-year-old Cartier Prize for Watchmaking Talents of Tomorrow.
