Carsten Höller's 'Doubt' at Pirelli HangarBicocca Turns Art into Adult Playground

exhibition · 2026-05-05

Carsten Höller's exhibition 'Doubt' at Pirelli HangarBicocca in Milan transforms the vast Navate space into an interactive adult amusement park, running until July 31, 2016. Curated by Vicente Todolí, the show embodies Höller's theory of art as evolved entertainment, featuring over a dozen installations that challenge perception and decision-making. The exhibition opens with Y (2003), a bifurcating light installation forcing visitors to choose left or right, leading through Division Walls (2016) and Decision Corridors (2015). A central wall-work, Zöllner Stripes (2001–ongoing), divides the space, doubling or separating pieces like Double Carousel (2011), Double Neon Elevator (2016), Revolving Doors (2004–2016), Mäuseplatz (2010) with live black and white mice, Fara Fara (2014), Twins (2005–ongoing), Phil Wall II (2002), and Two Flying Machines (2015). The double-theory disorients, questioning which side of the exhibition is correct. Paths reconverge in a dim cube with two remote-controlled beds, available for overnight stays at a fee when the museum is closed. Other interactive works include Lights Corridor (2016) and Milan Swinging Corridor (2016), distorting spatial perception. Höller subtly suggests visitors may be lab rats under surveillance. The exhibition includes the Enel Contemporanea prize-winning Double Carousel.
