Carrie Yamaoka wins 2025 Maria Lassnig Prize with €50,000 award and Hamburger Kunsthalle exhibition

The Maria Lassnig Prize for 2025 has been awarded to Carrie Yamaoka, who will receive €50,000 along with a solo exhibition set for 2026 at the Hamburger Kunsthalle. This interdisciplinary artist, of Japanese-American descent, is celebrated for her innovative use of materials across various mediums, including painting, sculpture, photography, and drawing. Yamaoka co-founded the queer art collective fierce pussy in 1991. Her artwork has been showcased at prestigious locations such as MoMA PS1 in New York, Palais de Tokyo, and Centre Pompidou in Paris, as well as the Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus and London's Victoria & Albert Museum. The selection jury comprised notable figures like Peter Pakesch and Hans Ulrich Obrist. Previous laureates include Lubaina Himid (2023) and Atta Kwami (2021).
