Carpinelli and Nauman's 'Chamber of Reflection' at Yehudi Hollander-Pappi

exhibition · 2026-04-24

At Yehudi Hollander-Pappi gallery in São Paulo, a two-artist exhibition pairs Brazilian painter Caio Carpinelli with Bruce Nauman. Carpinelli's nine monolithic black paintings from 2025, collectively titled 'Chamber of Reflection,' are displayed alongside three historical Nauman videos. The show opens with a monumental arrangement of six paintings facing each other, their deeply layered black fields featuring circular elements and concentric rays that evoke solar or lunar positions. Carpinelli's work emphasizes materiality and absence, drawing comparison to Michael Heizer's 'Negative Megalith #5' (1998). In a second room, Nauman's 'Bouncing in the Corner, No. 2: Upside Down' (1969) and 'Violin Tuned D.E.A.D.' (1969) play on Hantarex monitors. On the mezzanine, a single diptych painting interacts with Nauman's 'Bouncing Two Balls Between the Floor and Ceiling with Changing Rhythms' (1967–68). The exhibition runs from 29 April to 22 May 2025.
