Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev Retires from Castello di Rivoli, Plans Arte Povera Exhibition in Paris

institutional · 2026-04-23

Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, who has served as the director of Italy's Castello di Rivoli Museo d'Arte Contemporanea since 2016, will retire at the age of 66, effective December 2024. With over twenty years at the museum, she began her tenure as chief curator in 2002 after spending two years at New York's PS1. Seeking to step away from administrative demands, Christov-Bakargiev plans to focus on teaching and collaborating with artists, no longer directing institutions or engaging with culture ministers. A significant Arte Povera exhibition is set to debut at the Bourse de Commerce in Paris in 2024. She has been instrumental in diversifying the museum's collection and has notable curatorial achievements, including Documenta 13 in 2012 and co-organizing "The Short Century" at MoMA PS1.
