Caroline Gueye Represents Senegal at the 61st Venice Biennale Amid Protests

exhibition · 2026-05-11

The 61st Venice Biennale opened this weekend under tension, with protests, sit-ins, and speeches during the preview due to the presence of Russian and Israeli pavilions. The jury resigned the day before the opening, refusing to evaluate artists from countries accused of war crimes—Israel and Russia. This year, 111 artists are featured in the central exhibition, surrounded by about a hundred national pavilions. Senegal is participating, housed in the Palazzo Navaggero along the Grand Canal, near the Giardini. RFI interviewed artist Caroline Gueye, who represents Senegal this year.
