Carolina Sandretto's Artist Book 'External Memories, Internal Memories'

publication · 2026-04-27

Carolina Sandretto (b. 1981) has produced an artist book titled 'External Memories, Internal Memories', printed in 199 numbered copies. The work is divided into two spiral-bound notebooks with gray-scale covers—one lighter, one darker. 'External Memories' originated during the first lockdown in late February 2020, when Sandretto, en route to the North Pole, was forced to return and isolate at the family home in Pietrasanta. The series captures the unchanging view from the terrace over time, overlaid with sentimental and spiritual elements like jasmine, walls, roofs, clouds, and sky. 'Internal Memories' documents the interior of the house, focusing on objects left by the artist's mother and grandmothers—traces of female lives. The book includes no critical introduction, only a quote from Ennio Flaiano's 'Diario notturno' and Sandretto's own explanatory texts. The project is published by Artribune and is available for purchase via the artist's Big Cartel store.
