exhibition · 2026-04-22

The Krannert Art Museum at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign hosted a retrospective exhibition titled 'Carolee Schneemann: Within and Beyond the Premises' from January 27 to April 1, 2012. This showcase, which originated at the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art, highlighted significant pieces such as 'Fuses' (1964-67), 'Meat Joy' (1964-2010), 'Eye Body: 36 Transformative Actions' (1963), 'Up to and Including Her Limits' (1973-76), 'Terminal Velocity' (2001), and 'Snows' (1967). It also featured 'Schneemann, Tenney and Kitch: The Illinois Years' (1959-60) and placed a strong emphasis on film projections. Notably, Schneemann earned her MFA from the University of Illinois in 1961 and was recognized for her avant-garde collaborations. Director Kathleen Harleman acknowledged the difficulties in touring due to the provocative nature of the works.
