Carol Salmanson's 'Diaphany' Installation at Mixed Greens Gallery in 2009

Carol Salmanson presented 'Diaphany' at Mixed Greens Gallery in February 2009, an installation that integrated the gallery's architectural features into its design. Located at 531 West 26th Street in New York City, the work utilized the building's west window mullions, center window sill, and east window fire escape railing and ladder as geometric foundations. The installation incorporated 2,642 LEDs in six colors and two shapes, along with fluorescents and over 30 colors of gel filters positioned at varying distances behind permanently installed diffuser material in the gallery's 108 square feet of windows. This arrangement created effects ranging from hard edges to soft blends and included both large and small forms. The gallery's windows were illuminated daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., enhancing the visual impact of the piece. The work was featured as an artcritical PIC, highlighting its significance in contemporary art at the time. Salmanson's approach transformed the gallery space into a dynamic environment where light and architecture interacted directly.
