Carol Rama's Multiples on View at Bologna's Villa delle Rose

exhibition · 2026-04-26

The MAMbo – Museo d’Arte Moderna di Bologna presents 'CAROL RAMA. Unique Multiples' at Villa delle Rose, reopening after renovations. The exhibition focuses on the artist's multiples produced between 1993 and 2005 with Franco Masoero Edizioni d’Arte – Torino, from the Collezione Franco Masoero e Alexandra Wetzel. Over 120 works span Rama's career, highlighting her engagement with printmaking and sculpture. Curated by Elena Re, the show explores themes of eroticism, memory, and materiality, featuring unique interventions on prints—such as hand-painting, collage, and red nail polish. Rama began making multiples at age 75 after meeting publisher Franco Masoero, revisiting earlier works like the 1944-47 etchings 'Le Parche' and producing three bronze sculptures and over 150 original engravings. The exhibition includes objects, documents, and photographs from Masoero's archive, as well as audio of the artist's own words. Director Lorenzo Balbi notes Rama's belated recognition despite support from critics like Lea Vergine, emphasizing the contemporary urgency of her work as a woman artist. The show runs at Villa delle Rose, with some multiples also appearing in the concurrent exhibition 'Facile ironia' at MAMbo from February 5.
