Carnegie International 58th Edition Explores Asynchronous Temporalities

exhibition · 2026-04-20

The 58th Carnegie International at Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, titled 'Is it morning for you yet?', runs until 2 April 2023. Curated by Sohrab Mohebbi, the exhibition features over 100 artists, archives, and collectives, focusing on solidarity, collectivity, and resistance by re-examining the post-1945 US geopolitical footprint. The title references a Mayan morning greeting acknowledging different perceptions of time. Key works include Dia al-Azzawi's 'Ruins of Two Cities: Mosul and Aleppo' (2020), a resin labyrinth depicting destroyed cities in Iraq and Syria; Melike Kara's photographic installation exploring displaced Kurdish families; Hiromi Tsuchida's 'Hiroshima Collection' (1982–95); and Mohammed Sami's paintings of war memories. The exhibition also features works from the Museo de la Solidaridad Salvador Allende Collection, Indonesian collective Hyphen's presentation of Kustiyah, The Laal Collection showcasing Fereydoun Ave, and Dogma collection's North Vietnamese propaganda posters. Contemporary outliers include Mire Lee, Tishan Hsu, and terra0's NFT-based tree. Organic materials appear in works by Krista Belle Stewart, Daniel Lie, and Dala Nasser. Pio Abad's 'Distant Possessions' critiques the museum's imperialist legacy. The exhibition aims to upend canonized timelines and present subversive narratives of complicity, disobedience, and cultural resilience.
