Carmela Gross's 1978 Stamp Exhibition Revisited with 300+ Documents at IAC

exhibition · 2026-04-23

The Instituto de Arte Contemporânea (IAC) in São Paulo presents 'Carimbos,' an exhibition revisiting Carmela Gross's 1978 show at the Gabinete de Artes Gráficas. Curated by Ricardo Resende, it features 12 of the original 80 works alongside over 300 archival items, revealing the artist's creative process. Gross first experimented with stamps in 1968 at the IV Salão de Arte Moderna do Distrito Federal in Brasília. The display includes a 1978 text by art historian Flávio Motta and period press clippings. Gross describes the show as an 'archaeology' of the original project, showcasing her systematic documentation. She donated the extensive archive to the IAC, with many stamps restored in 2015. The expography uses galvanized zinc sheets and magnets. Gross's recent work includes 'Fendas, fagulhas' at Galeria Vermelho in 2021 and 'Boca do inferno' at the 34th Bienal de São Paulo. She is preparing new projects for 2024. Resende notes the exhibition highlights the procedural nature of her work, rooted in conceptual drawing.
