Carmel Louise's DeConstructed Photography Blends Science and Art

Carmel Louise, an artist from Melbourne, has pioneered a technique known as DeConstructed Photography, blending her scientific expertise with fine art photography. After earning her degree with distinction from RMIT University in 2010, she shifted from applied science and laboratory work to visual arts. Her creative process starts with a single photograph, which she dissects and rearranges digitally, treating the image as a foundational element. One of her significant pieces, Constructional No.1, V4, involved around two hundred hours of meticulous labor, featuring hand-cut printed layers affixed to foam core to form a sculptural relief. Louise emphasizes that her work is distinct from digital art due to its basis in capturing light from the real world. Additionally, she operates a photography business focused on fine art printing, documentation, and restoration. Currently, she is engaged in the Brunswick Mullet Project, a portrait series launched in 2024, aiming to document one hundred individuals in Brunswick with the unique hairstyle, exploring themes of identity and community in Melbourne's inner north.
