Carly Glovinski Returns to Painting After Two Decades in 'Into the Garden'

exhibition · 2026-05-15

Maine-based artist Carly Glovinski opens 'Into the Garden,' her third solo exhibition with New York's Morgan Lehman Gallery, exploring gardening as a parallel to art-making. The show marks her return to painting after a 20-year hiatus. Glovinski's interest in gardening began during a residency at Surf Point in southern Maine, where she discovered the overgrown grounds of Wild Knoll, former home of writer May Sarton. She planted the Wild Knoll Foundation Garden across the footprint of the demolished house, creating a site-specific living work and community garden. The exhibition includes acrylic paintings, large-scale shaped wall works based on pressed-flower specimens, and works on herbarium paper. Paintings like 'Snapdragon Support System' (2026) depict bird's-eye views of garden plots with geometric abstraction. Glovinski's recent works include 'Almanac' at Mass MoCA through 2026 and 'Opelske,' a three-story botanical mosaic at Boston Seaport. In summer 2025, she painted plein air on Appledore Island, inspired by 19th-century writer Celia Thaxter's garden. The show runs at Morgan Lehman Gallery in 2026.
