artist · 2026-04-27

Carlotta Strobele, a co-founder of Arte Sella, the renowned open-air museum in Trentino, died on May 29 at her home in Borgo Valsugana at age 98. Born in 1924 as Carlotta von Strobele Wangendorf, she was an artist, intellectual, and patron from an Austro-Hungarian family that had a branch in Borgo Valsugana since 1583. She moved to Villa Strobele in 1990, a historic building built in 1861 that became the gateway to Arte Sella's architecture path. Arte Sella was founded in 1986 with artistic director Emanuele Montibeller and architect Enrico Ferrari, creating a novel way to produce, exhibit, and interact with art in Italy. The new season had just begun with a concert by Giovanni Sollima and Mario Brunello celebrating 20 years of Fucina Arte Sella. Three new works were being installed: Tobusa Bench by Satoko Shinohara, Bamboo Ring by Kengo Kuma (previously shown in London and Milan), and an installation by Arcangelo Sassolino, set to open June 18. Sassolino also created a monumental excavator-shaped work in Palermo for the 30th anniversary of the Capaci and Via D'Amelio massacres.
