institutional · 2026-05-04

Carlos Urroz, who previously served as the director of ARCOmadrid, has been named the executive director of Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary (TBA21), an organization established in 2002 by Francesca Thyssen in Vienna. Following his announcement of a sabbatical in February, Urroz will oversee TBA21's initiatives in Spain and Portugal while also managing its global outreach. Since its inception, TBA21 has been dedicated to supporting artists addressing political, social, and environmental themes and has operated the TBA21-Academy, which emphasizes sustainability since 2015. Urroz first met Thyssen in 2008 at the Seville Biennial and has collaborated on exhibitions at Museo Thyssen. He is set to receive a Lisbon city medal for ARCOlisboa during its fourth edition (May 16–19) and will visit TBA21 project locations, including Lopud, Croatia. Upcoming exhibitions will showcase works by Tomás Saraceno and Dominique González-Foerster.
