Carlos Cruz-Diez's Final Curated Exhibition Opens in São Paulo
A posthumous exhibition of Venezuelan artist Carlos Cruz-Diez, who died in July at age 95, opened at the Espaço Cultural Porto Seguro in São Paulo on November 9. Titled 'Cruz-Diez: a liberdade da cor,' it is the last global show personally approved by the artist, who collaborated on its conception with curator Rodrigo Villela. The exhibition features works from the collection of gallerist Raquel Arnaud, including a 1965 physichromie from a pre-industrial period. Key installations include 'Labirinto Transcromia' (1965/2017), shown for the first time in Brazil, and 'Cromossaturação,' a three-room color environment. A separate section presents twenty black-and-white photographs by Cruz-Diez, revealing an early artistic side focused on portraiture and landscapes from 1950s Venezuela and Spain. The artist's gallerists, Raquel Arnaud and Luiz Sève, describe his passing as 'the loss of a friend.' Cruz-Diez, who lived in France since the 1960s, maintained a strong connection to Venezuela, where one of his major works is located at the Simón Bolívar International Airport in Caracas.
